Lokmata Rani Rasmoni established the Dakshineswar Kali Mandir on Thursday, May 31, 1855, the day of the holy bath.

History:

In 1848

Rani Rasmanidevi of Janbazar in Calcutta organized a pilgrimage to Kashi to pay homage to Annapurna. She set out in 24 boats with relatives, slaves and supplies.According to legend, on the eve of the journey, the queen goddess Kali had a dream. The goddess told him,

“There is no need to go to Kashi. Worship by setting up my idol in a beautiful temple on the banks of the Ganges. I will worship as soon as I appear in that idol. ”

Ramakrishna Paramahamsa came to this temple in 1855 as an associate of his grandfather Ramkumar, the chief priest, and after Ramkumar's death he succeeded his grandfather.

After this dream, the queen immediately bought land on the banks of the Ganges and started construction of the temple.

It ended in 1855.

The 20-acre plot of the temple was purchased from an Englishman named John Hasty. The place was popularly known as Saheban Bagicha. Part of it was the tortoise-shaped Muslim cemetery. So in Tantra the place is considered suitable for energy worship. This temple was built in eight years at a cost of nine lakh rupees. The statue was erected in the temple in a grand procession on 31 May 1855, the day of the bathing procession. Earlier the worship of the temple was called Mata Bhavatarini Kalika.

Ramkumar Chattopadhyay became the chief priest, his younger brother Gadadhar or Gadai (later Ramakrishna Paramahamsa) became his associate. Later his nephew's heart also continued to help him.

Architecture:

Construction of the temple began in 1847 and was completed in 1855.

The temple is built in the Navaratna style of Bengali architecture. The main temple has three floors. Its nine peaks are divided into two upper floors. The temple faces south. The sanctum sanctorum is located on a raised building. The building is 48 square feet wide and 100 feet high.

The architecture of this Navaratna temple is more than 100 feet high. In the sanctum sanctorum, Goddess Kali stands on the chest of Shiva lying on a silver lotus with a thousand petals. One piece is made of stone

In the sanctum sanctorum (Sanctum Sanctuary) the idol known as Bhavatarini is established on the chest of Shiva. These two statues are placed on a silver lotus lotus.

The twelve temples of the same type facing east near the main temple are built in the style of Atchala architecture.

These temples stand on two sides of a ghat of the Ganges. To the north-east of the temple premises is the Radhakanta temple. In this temple there are twenty-one and a half inch Krishna and sixteen inch Radha idols on a silver throne. And Rani Rasmani's home deity (Raghubir) is residing in Dakshineswar.
